Food Justice
Food justice is described as the equitable access to healthy, nutritious, culturally appropriate food. It addresses the structural inequities that exist in food systems.
The core members of the South Fraser RRT advocated for the inclusion of food justice as a core issue and highlighted the need for a holistic approach to food justice with cultural and religious considerations.
The South Fraser RRT will organize a working group to explore current best practices in food justice models and current food-related supports in the South Fraser Region.
We will develop a summary report of data collected on best practices of food justice with a specific focus on the Afghan, Ukrainian and other refugee communities in the South Fraser Region.
Other activities we will undertake include:
- Reaching out to regional grocery stores for emergency grocery vouchers, gift cards, rescued food drives and grocery hampers, as well as farmers and community markets for food access
- Coordinating accessible food delivery to populations with difficulties accessing food
- Conducting community kitchens to allow for healing and community connection
- Providing welcome baskets and food hampers to resettled refugees and displaced Ukrainians in the South Fraser Region
Food insecurity is a dire issue that many newcomers experience upon settling in
Canada. Learn more about this issue in this report here.
