Happy Kwanzaa to everyone celebrating! Today, December 26 until January 1, African communities in the United States, Canada and other countries celebrate Kwanzaa, a time to honour pan-African heritage and culture. The name Kwanzaa comes from a Swahili phrase, “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning "first fruits.” Each day, a candle is lit, symbolizing one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, including unity, purpose and collective responsibility. As we reflect on these principles, let’s carry the spirit of Kwanzaa into the new year and beyond, celebrating and uplifting the Black community in meaningful ways. Continue the celebration this February at our Black in BC: Celebrating Black Excellence event, on February 7, 2025, at the Surrey Arts Centre.
