Race and religion are two main motivators for hate crimes due to stereotypes, racial bias and systemic discrimination. Some statistics at a glance show us: 💢 In BC, hate crimes based on race or ethnicity rose 116% (2019–2023) 💢 In BC, hate crimes based on religion rose by 202% (2019–2023) 💢 37% of police-reported hate crimes motivated by race/ethnicity were reported by Black persons (2023) 💢 80% increase in the number of police-reported crimes that were motived by race or ethnicity in Canada (2019–2020) 💢 Muslim individuals saw an increase of targeted hate crimes by 94% (2022–2023) 💢 Jewish individuals saw an increase of targeted hate crimes by 71% (2022–2023) 💢 Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist individuals saw an increase of targeted hate crimes by 37% (2022–2023) Are you wanting to support your community and encourage safety? Hate is on the rise in Canada with a steady increase of hate crimes since 2019. Some statistics* at a glance show that: 💢 Police-reported hate crimes in Canada rose 32% (2022–2023) 💢 3,612 police-reported (2022) vs 4,777 police-reported (2023) 💢 BC was one of the provinces that saw the largest increases of hate crimes reporting a total of 198 (2020) 💢 Hate crimes targeting Canada’s South Asian population saw an increase of 143% (2019–2022) These numbers can feel overwhelming, but every action matters.
