Did you know that June 27 is Canadian Multiculturalism Day? The day gets a little overlooked sometimes because of its close proximity to Canada Day. But it’s an important day recognizing that Canada was the first country in the world to adopt a multiculturalism policy. Today, multiculturalism and its links to immigration are an integral part of the country’s identity. As they say, diversity is our strength!
That diversity includes the respect and freedom to celebrate our cultural traditions, practise our faiths and share our voices. It also ensures we have the right to stand up and speak out if our rights are infringed upon.
Of course, Canada isn’t perfect. We still have a lot of work to do when it comes to Indigenous reconciliation and overcoming systemic racism. While celebrating Canadian multiculturalism today, let’s listen to each other, respect one another, embrace our diversity and move forward together as Canadians. Happy Canadian Multiculturalism Day!
