People of DIVERSEcity

DIVERSEcity would not be the community-building, charitable organization it is without the dedication and passion of our amazing employees and volunteers, who have shown us what resilience means during this ongoing pandemic. In our new series “People of DIVERSEcity,” we’ll spotlight some of these inspiring folks.

Last week around 75 seniors from our Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) felt the holiday spirit — albeit it a bit cold — on a special field trip to go on the Bear Creek Christmas Train! The seniors laughed, crafted fun hats, took photos with Santa and filled the air with Christmas carols — their favourite was We Wish You a Merry Christmas! For many seniors, volunteers and some staff, this was the first time they had ever been on the train or seen the elaborate light display put on by the City of Surrey at Bear Creek Park! If you or a senior you know would like to be a part of engaging community building field trips like this, contact seniors@dcrs.ca or visit www.dcrs.ca/our-services/services-for-seniors/ #ForPeopleForCommunities #bctrains #Christmas #surreybc #Newton #delta #seniors #FREE #Programs #Services ... In response to escalating instances of racism across BC, DIVERSEcity is one of several community organizations called upon by the United Way BC - Lower Mainland Region to bolster local responses and anti-racism efforts that provide support to people who have experienced hate and racism. “With the support of [this grant], our goal is to bring people and communities together against hate,” says Lenya Wilks, Director, Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement, DIVERSEcity. “One of our strategic priorities as an organization is to strengthen community connection, especially by creating spaces for dialogue where every voice can be heard. Our new Together Against Hate project will offer these spaces — both in person and online — for information sharing and advocacy against racism and hate.” Starting in early 2025 until March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we will be hosting several “Together Against Hate” workshops that bring diverse community members, partners and Indigenous communities together to foster honest conversations on racism and hate, cultural exchange, resilience-building and finding new ways forward, together. Read more here about the upcoming workshops: www.dcrs.ca/together-against-hate-a-diversecity-project/Have you encountered an incident of racism or hate?
