Congratulations to Winnie Chironga, the second winner of this year’s Black Brilliance “Trailblazer” award! Winnie is the Associate Director of Indigenous Relations and Community Development at AMSSA BC. Winnie works closely every day with Indigenous elders to learn from them, witness their teachings and bring those back to other newcomers through her work at AMSSA and her volunteer work with Sisters in Canada. “To be nominated alone was an honour, but to be recognized as a trailblazer, well, that is beyond anything I could have imagined,” shared Winnie upon receiving the award. “I had a career change in the middle of a global pandemic. Amid all the uncertainty I met a leader [Katie Crocker, CEO, AMSSA] who saw something in me. My passion to uplift others and make space was met with enthusiasm and support. For the first time in a corporate setting, I could show up as myself — and I was enough. Whilst that may not seem like much, to a woman of colour, to a Black woman, that is a rare gift … I will leave you with an African proverb that I have leaned on for hope that says, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’”Learn more about the winners here: www.dcrs.ca/black-brilliance-illuminated-at-black-in-bc-event/ #Awards #BlackBrilliance #BlackExcellence #DIVERSEcity #ForPeopleForCommunities #SurreyBC ... We can’t wait to get moving at the Women’s Leadership Forum on Thursday, March 6, 2025! May Elford and Olivia Hornstein will be leading this year’s interactive activity: get ready for a Zumba® break unlike any other!About May: Zumba with May Elford Hi, my name is May Elford and I love teaching Zumba® Fitness classes. The reason is simple: Every class feels like a party! It's a workout in disguise.I discovered my passion for dance again when I started attending Zumba® classes in May 2012. Zumba® helped me with my postpartum depression. My happy hour is when I dance and get lost in the music. In March 2013, I decided to get my Zumba® instructor license, and in 2016, I pursued further by obtaining a group fitness certification with CanfitPro. It's been 11 years and it's still going strong!I currently teach 3 days a week in the Community Centres at the City of Coquitlam, two classes a week in Vancouver and one class a week in New Westminster. I hope to see you in one of my classes!About Liv: With 10 years of classical ballet training as well as international Zumba experience, Liv has been able to share her passion for movement with many different groups of people. Her classes in New Westminster and South Surrey aren’t just fitness sessions; they’re vibrant celebrations of life. She creates a unique atmosphere of energy while incorporating elements of being present and intentional. Her philosophy is simple yet profound – spread positivity through dance. In her classes, you’ll find a welcoming space where smiles are contagious, and every move brings you closer to a more confident and energized you.DIVERSEcity x Minerva BC's Women’s Leadership Forum will take place on Thursday March 6, 2025 at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster. Whether you’re an emerging or established woman leader, we’re looking forward to having you at this incredible event!Learn more and secure your spot today! www.dcrs.ca/women #IWF #IWF2025 #internationalwomensday #ForPeopleForCommunities #minervabc ...
