Today is #ZeroDiscriminationDay — a day celebrated by the UN that highlights and promotes equality, inclusion and safety for all. Today we reflect on our first Together Against Hate workshop, Breaking Barriers: Understanding and Overcoming Islamophobia, held in January in commemoration of the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia. The workshop created space for critical conversations on dismantling biases and fostering understanding. This session was not just about reflection, but a commitment to meaningful action against Islamophobia. “Breaking stereotypes requires showcasing the full spectrum of Muslim life, beyond the narrow narratives often seen in the media,” shares Sumaiyyah Adam, DIVERSEcity Manager, Partnerships. Facilitated by Foundation for a Path Forward co-founders Yusuf Siraj and Tariq Tyab, leaders in anti-racism initiatives in BC, they work in partnership with Strong Cities Network, and Resilience B.C. under the Office of the Attorney General to advance resilience and inclusivity across Canada. Through rich discussions and an in-depth examination of six common biases, highlighted in the featured video, the workshop provided powerful insights into how stereotypes take root and manifest in everyday life. Participants experienced pivotal “light bulb” moments that deepened their understanding and challenged preconceived notions. We invite you to take an active stand and join the dialogue at our upcoming Together Against Hate Community Forum: Eliminating Racism for a Better Future happening March 22, 2025.
